The city of Phoenix is distinguished from other major US metropolitan centers in the fact that it was established in the late part of the 20th century; hence, very little modern American history exists. Perhaps for this reason, Arizonans have learned to appreciate and respect historic buildings, structures and artifacts that may not be considered worthy of saving in other more established metropolises. It is sometimes hard for visitors to immediately appreciate our historical monuments when comparing to those in 17th century cities.
